Tyree is an accomplished trial lawyer with almost 40 years of experience specializing in corporate and employment disputes involving class action, multi-plaintiff and single plaintiff matters.  His corporate disputes include litigating restrictive covenant, misappropriation of trade secrets, fair lending and corporate governance claims.  His employment disputes focus largely on defending claims of race, sex, age, disability and sexual orientation discrimination and harassment in federal and state courts around the country with a particular emphasis in California.  More recently, he has defended employers in claims alleging reverse discrimination in violation of state and federal laws, including recent Executive Orders prohibiting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs.  In addition to his litigation practice, Tyree counsels Boards and C-Suite Executives on navigating thorny employment issues such as the aforementioned Executive Orders prohibiting DEI initiatives as well as corporate governance and compliance challenges.  His clients span the financial services, healthcare, government contractor, manufacturing , educational and non-profit sectors.

Tyree also is active in the community having served on numerous nonprofit boards as well as serving on the Board of Directors for Georgetown University and Board of Trustees for Bowdoin College.  He has remained committed to the mentoring and development of junior attorneys and pro bono service with his most compelling pro bono work to date involving death penalty litigation in the State of Alabama that is still under advisement by the court.

What advice would you offer to new attorneys interested in your field?

Your abilities have brought you this far – remain confident in that. Continue to hone your talents by taking advantage of the breadth of training resources that are available to you, not only within your organization, but otherwise. There is no need to reinvent yourself. Instead, focus on improving upon what has made you successful up to this point. Finally, utilize those in and outside of your network who have walked in your shoes before. Several attorneys are willing (and delighted) to mentor junior attorneys. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Develop thick skin and emotional intelligence in equal measure. Master the technical aspects of the NLRA and federal employment statutes, but remember that successful outcomes often depend on your ability to build trust, communicate effectively, and find creative solutions that serve both legal and business objectives. Seek mentorship, observe seasoned practitioners in action, and don’t be afraid to take on challenging cases that will stretch your skills.

His work ranges from drafting and negotiating definitive and ancillary documents for the lease, purchase, and sale of real property to advising clients on local and state regulatory regimes related to pre-development entitlement. Brent is an expert on a range of issues related to the use and development of real property in the State of Washington, including municipal zoning and permitting requirements, private-public development agreements, Washington’s Growth Management Act (GMA) and State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), and federal takings jurisprudence and the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions in the context of land use and development.

What advice would you offer to new attorneys interested in your field?

Start with humility. Success in law school is just the beginning —you’re entering an entirely different game once you start practicing. A “can do” attitude goes a long way. Be willing to work hard, embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, and focus on improving daily. Find creative ways to contribute and provide value starting Day 1.

Ownership of and taking responsibility for your work is critical. Master your part, however small. Be proactive in your approach, clear in your communication, and fully accountable for what you’re doing. That will go a long way toward building trust and showing your team they can rely on you without constant oversight.

You were hired because you’re smart and capable. Own that. Be a driver, not a passenger. Show initiative, contribute meaningfully, and always push to learn and grow. These qualities have helped me succeed, and I believe they can do the same for you.
