What advice would you offer to new attorneys interested in your field?
Starting a new job is never easy, particularly in a field that is unfamiliar. And, as a litigator, you are often asked to learn new subject areas quickly. When entering a new area, it’s easy to worry about things outside of your control. But one thing that you can control is your work product. Always remember to pay attention to details and focus on producing your highest quality work product. Even if an assignment seems outside of your scope of expertise or years of experience, take responsibility and ownership of your projects and ask questions, as appropriate, on how you should tackle a difficult task. The law is always changing in my area and some issues can fall into a gray area. Working really hard on your work assignments and taking them seriously gives you a chance to learn and grow as the field evolves. Your colleagues and clients will notice that you are deeply engaged and that will give them confidence in your abilities to take on other challenges.
Final thoughts…
The kind of lawyer I want to invest in for the long-term is someone who tells me things I need to hear, not necessarily things I want to hear. If you see something you think may be wrong or missing, don’t be afraid to speak up. Clients and supervising attorneys sincerely appreciate when a new attorney is paying close attention to the details.
