Job Title: Director/Legal Counsel, Litigation

Organization: Coca Cola Company

Mid-level litigation attorney with litigation and litigation management experience to sit within the Global Regulatory and Litigation Team at The Coca-Cola Company.  Litigation Counsel will assist Head of Litigation in managing the Company’s national litigation docket while working to strategically minimize litigation risks.

The role will be responsible for the legal representation of the Company in adversarial proceedings, including, litigation, arbitration, government investigations and mediations and will also provide legal counseling and advice on litigation risks and exposure to the legal function and business stakeholders.

This role will assist with establishing and maintaining a global litigation network that will leverage litigation expertise across the legal function.

We require a candidate with 4+ years of experience in litigation, corporate in-house experience is welcomed.

Key Responsibilities:

Litigation & Litigation Management

  • Oversee management and defense of lawsuits, arbitrations, and other litigation matters; negotiate settlements of litigation/claims where appropriate.
  • Provide strategic direction on litigation matters to support the Company’s business goals and objectives.
  • Manage outside counsel to ensure zealous representation of the Company’s legal and business interests.
  • Direct, manage and provide legal strategy on all aspects of pleadings, motions and significant case filings.
  • Manage complex discovery including depositions of Company representatives, production of documents, reviewing and preparing discovery responses.
  • Management and oversight of docket of insurance and personal injury matters.
  • Management and oversight of e-discovery efforts (experience with Relativity a plus) including collaboration with our e-discovery vendors.
  • Negotiate and advocate on the Company’s behalf with adversaries and governmental agencies.

 

Litigation and Pre-Litigation Counseling and Advising

  • Advise business stakeholders on litigation risks and threats
  • Assess potential litigation exposure and costs; provide counsel to avoid or mitigate litigation risk.
  • Distill complex legal concepts into understandable and actionable advice, governance policies and training for all levels of the organization.

 

Support and Develop the Litigation Network

  • Help to establish and maintain a global and regional Litigation Network to develop and leverage litigation expertise across the function.
  • Foster strong, networked collaboration among the Legal Function, including the Global Regulatory and Litigation team, business clients and global legal colleagues to ensure legal services are provided in the most efficient and effective manner globally.
  • Communicate internally (internal clients/business leaders, legal function, Risk Management (insurance coverage), Finance) on litigation and regulatory issues and developments.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs as needed to protect Company brands and reputation.
  • Inspire engagement and participation of business clients in Company defense through networked relationships and education.

 

Budget Management

  • Manage litigation budgets and outside counsel to provide value and ensure top-notch representation for the Company.
  • Request and track quarterly budget estimates working closely with finance to ensure alignment against the litigation budget.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • JD and a practicing member in good standing of a U.S. State Bar. Excellent academic credentials required, including superior record in law school.
  • 4 plus years of experience in large national law firm and/or corporate legal department with expertise in litigation and risk management. Consumer products, marketing, and/or food and beverage industry experience a plus.

  • Detail oriented and effective multi-tasker, ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to manage outside counsel, including determining the role of outside counsel and managing staffing.
  • Ability to negotiate, set and manage legal budgets.
