Advice to New Attorneys in Your Field of Expertise

I encourage new attorneys to focus on learning the business, not just the law. Private investment funds is a highly business-oriented practice, and understanding your clients' investment strategies, priorities, and investors will make you a more effective counselor.

Equally important is building a strong technical foundation. Read the documents carefully, understand how provisions work together, and learn the tax, regulatory, and economic concepts underlying fund structures. Technical excellence creates credibility and trust.

As your career progresses, develop judgment alongside expertise. Clients value lawyers who can identify the issues that truly matter, distinguish meaningful risks from theoretical ones, and deliver practical solutions.

Finally, treat every assignment as an opportunity to build your reputation through responsiveness, reliability, and attention to detail. There is no single path to success. Build a practice that reflects your strengths, perspective, and authentic professional identity.

Final Thoughts...

My career has reinforced that excellence and authenticity are not competing ideas. Develop outstanding technical skills, exercise sound judgment, and deliver exceptional service, but bring your own perspective to the work. Some of your greatest strengths may be the qualities that set you apart. Success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.
